Frequently Asked Questions
What audio formats does SongSplit AI support?
Input: MP3, WAV, AIFF, M4A, AAC, FLAC, and any other DRM-free format that macOS/iOS can decode.
Output: M4A (high quality, works everywhere on Apple devices).
Why won’t my song work? / What about DRM?
SongSplit AI only works with DRM-free audio files. If you’re trying to split a song from a streaming service (Spotify, Apple Music streaming, etc.), it won’t work because those files are protected.
Songs you actually own work great:
- Music purchased from iTunes/Apple Music (downloads, not streaming)
- MP3s from Bandcamp, Amazon, or other stores
- CDs you’ve ripped
- Your own recordings
If a file plays in your Music app but won’t load in SongSplit AI, it’s likely DRM-protected.
How long does processing take?
It depends on:
- Song length: A 3-minute song processes faster than a 10-minute epic
- Quality mode: Fast mode is… fast. Quality mode takes longer but produces cleaner separation
- Your device: Newer Macs and iPhones with better Neural Engines process faster
Typically, Fast mode processes a song in 10-30 seconds. Quality mode might take 1-3 minutes for a standard-length track.
Why is separation not perfect?
Audio source separation is a challenging problem. SongSplit AI uses Apple’s on-device AI, which does an impressive job, but no algorithm can perfectly unmix a song that was mixed by professional engineers. You might notice:
- Some vocal bleed in the instrumental
- Some instrumental bleed in the vocals
- Artifacts in complex passages
The results are great for karaoke, practice, and sampling. For professional production, you may need to do some additional processing.
Does it work offline?
Yes! The AI model is bundled with the app. Once you’ve downloaded SongSplit AI, you don’t need an internet connection to use it.
Can I use the stems commercially?
That depends on your rights to the original song, not SongSplit AI. If you have permission to use the original audio, you can use the stems. SongSplit AI is just a tool—copyright still applies.
Why can’t I process multiple songs at once?
To keep the app simple and focused, SongSplit AI processes one song at a time. This also ensures maximum quality by dedicating all processing power to a single separation.
The app crashed. What do I do?
- Make sure you’re running the latest version from the App Store
- Restart the app and try again
